The information below explains our admission policy and criteria if you decide to apply for a residency position for the upcoming academic year. I think it will answer almost all your questions. If not, send me another E-mail for further information.

ALL applications MUST be made via ERAS (see one of the paragraphs below for details). Paper applications will not be accepted.
We do not offer clerkships, observerships, or externships as we focus our teaching program exclusively on our residents.
We will start accepting applications for PGY1 positions in our Primary Care - Internal Medicine residency training program for the upcoming academic year as soon as ERAS starts accepting applications (MyERAS opens on July 1st so that applicants can begin working on their applications and the actual application process begins on September 1st). We will be taking 25 PGY1 residents. Our program is not pyramidal; we have positions for all accepted residents for a full 3 years of training. We do not offer any preliminary or transitional positions. All our residency positions are categorical and come with the clear understanding that you are committing yourself to complete, in our program, the full three years of residency training required for Internal Medicine in order to be eligible to take the ABIM board exam.
The current RRC/ACGME accreditation status of our Internal Medicine residency training program is "Continuing Full Accreditation" which is the RRC's highest rating.
We screen our applicants using their USMLE Parts 1 and 2 scores and then consider for interview only those applicants with scores >= 85 on their first exam attempts. However, we cannot interview all candidates who meet these criteria because we receive a large number of qualified applications. You should not apply to our program if you have failed either the USMLE Step 1 or Step 2 exams because your application will not be considered.
You can apply even if you have taken only one (or even neither) of the USMLE exams as long as you take the missing USMLE exam(s) in a timely fashion. However, we do not review applications until we receive both your USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 scores. Thus, to be interviewed in time for the NRMP match, you would probably have to complete the USMLE Step 1 and 2 exams by mid-December so the we receive the results in early to mid-January and then if you meet our criteria, we can schedule an interview before we (and you) have to submit our match lists (ROLIC) in mid to late February. On the positive side, we receive these scores in a timely fashion directly from the ECFMG/NBME via ERAS usually within 3-5 weeks after you take the test. Further, since we take residents both in the match and out of the match (both before and after the match), we can take candidates right up to June 30th (depending on their visa status) to start in our residency program on July 1st.
Our residents are primarily international medical graduates and we take both men and women without regard to sex, race, or national origin. We do not use the year of an applicant's graduation from medical school in our admission criteria; some of our residents are 50 or older. Significant research experience, published papers, and advanced degrees (Masters or PhD) are weighted positively but are not required for application to our program. We do not require US medical experience but a working knowledge of spoken English is necessary and we evaluate your spoken English as part of the interview process.
The interview plays a major role in the admission process. Interviews are conducted by two Attending Physicians or by an Attending Physician and either a 4th year Chief Resident or a clinical fellow. All applications and interviews are discussed by our Medical-Education Committee which makes the final decision as to whether to rank an applicant for the NRMP match (or accept an applicant pre-match or post-match).
We plan to start interviewing in late September or October and will continue to interview through the Fall and Winter. We are looking primarily for applicants with permanent residency ("green card," work authorization, or US citizenship). However, we do take and sponsor significant numbers of applicants for H1 visas. We also sponsor a few applicants for J1 visas on a case-by-case basis. We will be offering positions both pre-match and through the NRMP (the match). The deadline for applications for candidates to be considered for the NRMP match is two weeks before the deadline for submission of your NRMP Ranked Order List. However, the sooner you put in your application, the better the chance you have of being interviewed. Also, we tend to interview candidates as their ERAS applications are completed; thus, the earlier you apply, the sooner you get an interview and the better your chance of acceptance. Lastly, if your application does not reach us in time for us to schedule an interview before the NRMP match deadline for submitting ranked lists, we will not be able to rank you for the NRMP match. Thus, the sooner you apply, the better!
If you are interested in applying to Interfaith for residency, you MUST apply via ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System) as this enables us to get all the information we need to screen your application. Please note that USMLE transcripts are REQUIRED in order for your ERAS application to be reviewed. USMLE transcripts can be ordered from the NBME (National Board of Medical Examiners) who will send the transcript to ERAS who then sends it to us as part of your ERAS application. Also, you should submit at least three letters of recommendation with your application. If possible, these letters should include letters from the Chairman of the Department of Medicine of your medical school and the Dean of your medical school.
ERAS is sponsored by the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) and you can get information on ERAS at their WEB site (www.aamc.org). The standard ERAS application contains all the written information we need when it includes recommendation letters, your personal statement, and your USMLE and ECFMG transcripts.
You do not need an ECFMG certificate at the time of application but you do need a valid ECFMG certificate in order to either (1) start working as a resident in the hospital or (2) enter the NRMP match. [Note: If NRMP receives notification from the ECFMG that you have completed your exam requirements for certification by the rank order list deadline, you will be included in the Match. However, if you have not received ECFMG certification by the rank order list deadline, NRMP will withdraw you from the Match.] The sooner you take and pass your USMLE Step 3 test, the better. I recommend that you take Step 3 as soon as possible. Once you match (because you need an institution to sponsor you), you can apply for an H-1B visa without having passed the USMLE Step 3 exam but you can not actually receive the visa until you pass the exam. Further, for a fee of $1,000 paid to the US government, you can have your application handled in an expedited fashion (within 2-3 weeks). This year, everyone applying for an H-1B visa after the NRMP match will have to apply for their H-1B visa via this expedited pathway in order to ensure receiving their visa before July 1st and thus be able to start their residency on time.
Opportunities exist for clinical research with the faculty members particularly in the PGY3 year and are strongly encouraged. We have access to all patient information and to computer software that covers a wide range of statistical procedures used to analyze clinical data.
