Continuing the continuum of child health care through adolescence, Interfaith Medical Center

With many Centers of Excellence, Interfaith Medical Center's Department of Psychiatry is organized to provide a comprehensive continuum of mental health and substance abuse services that include both inpatient and ambulatory services with varying levels of intensity to meet the needs of the consumers in our community. The treatment programs are designed to meet the needs of dual diagnosis consumers who may have both mental illness and substance abuse issues or who may be both mentally ill and mentally retarded. Interfaith Medical Center provides a comprehensive array of outpatient, inpatient and emergency behavioral health, psychiatric, detoxification and drug rehabilitation programs, including:
Outpatient Services
- The Center for Mental Health provides outpatient mental health services to thousands of children, adults, geriatric mentally- ill and mentally- retarded patients This program has certification from the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) and the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disability(OMRDD)
Inpatient Services
Substance Abuse Detoxification and Rehabilitation Services, which is certified by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, provides rehabilitation for alcohol and drug abusing patients. A significant number of patients are referred to Interfaith Medical Center through the New York City Human Resources Administration.

- Psychiatric Emergency Room, a separate 9.39 Mental Health Law Emergency Room, operates 24/7 to assess mentally- ill and substance abusing patients.

The Department of Medicine at Interfaith Medical Center encompasses a wide array of patient services consistent with the health care's system's continuum of patient care. While all of Interfaith Medical Center's Department of Medicine Patient Care Services are vital to the communities it serves, its Sickle Cell Program and its comprehensive AIDS/HIV Counseling and Testing Program are truly highlights that reflect Interfaith Medical Center's knowledge of, concern for and response to the communities its serves.
Sickle Cell Program is recognized as an important referral center where screening, testing and counseling are offered to people of all ages. Consistent with the continuum of care at Interfaith Medical Center, the Sickle Cell Program at Interfaith Medical Center is the only one in Brooklyn where patients are treated in the same clinic from birth and are not transferred to another clinic as they get older. As part of the New York State Newborn Screening Program, Interfaith Medical Center identifies the babies with abnormal hemoglobin conditions, offers counseling and education to the parents of these babies and on-going treatment.
AIDS/HIV Counseling and Testing at Interfaith Medical Center includes a wide array of services for counseling, testing and treatment of patients with AIDS, delivered by our dedicated multidisciplinary team, which includes HIV Specialists, Board Certified Infectious Disease Specialists, Social Workers, Registered Nurses, HIV/AIDS Educators, Nutritionists, HIV Antibody Test Counselors and knowledgeable and caring support staff. As a New York State Designated AIDS Center, Interfaith Medical Center provides:

The Department of Dentistry at Interfaith Medical Center is extensive, consisting of salaried dentists and voluntary attending dentists whose specializations encompass all phases of adult and pediatric dentistry. In addition, through an affiliation with the New York University College of Dentistry, outstanding third and fourth year dental students rotate through the Interfaith Medical Center Dental Services Program and assist our dentists with our patients.
The oral maxillofacial surgery program at Interfaith Medical Center is outstanding. Major inpatient oral surgical procedures are performed each year with emphasis on orthodontic, pre-prosthetic and trauma surgery. This is complemented by other specialties such as pediatric dentistry, endodontics and periodontics in which the most advanced surgical techniques are utilized.

Inpatient and outpatient services provided by Interfaith Medical Center's Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services include physiatric medical evaluations, physical therapy, which includes classic modalities such as hydrotherapy, and specialty clinics for prosthetics and orthotics. Interfaith Medical Center's Pastoral Care Services is an essential part of the continuum of care to offer comprehensive and integrated health care to the bodies, spirits and minds of the people of the Interfaith Medical Center community. We provide emotional, spiritual, religious, moral and ethical support to our patients, staff and their loved ones. Interfaith Medical Center Pastoral Care Department Services include prayer, counseling, visitation, sacraments, worship and intellectual discussion consistent with each person's own faith, tradition, sentiments or beliefs. Staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by full-time and part-time ordained clergy of all faiths and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)-trained lay people, Interfaith Medical Center offers both proactive and reactive pastoral care services. The proactive pastoral care includes formal religious services, administration of sacraments and other sacred rituals such as Confession, Holy Communion, Baptism and Last Rites. Reactive pastoral care includes quiet moments of mediation or discussions of complex ethical and moral issues. Inspirational reading materials and religious supplies are also available.
Located on the first floor, Interfaith Medical Center's beautiful Chapel is always open and all are welcome for prayer, mediation or worship. Patients can also participate in the Chapel services from their own rooms via closed circuit television on channel 6.
